The virus we are talking about is HSV-1, herpes simplex virus type 1. It is the same virus behind cold sores. Most adults already carry it. Many picked it up in childhood from a family kiss and never knew. That does not mean you should ignore a possible exposure. How Herpes Spreads Through Kissing

What Asymptomatic Shedding Means for You

This is the part most people do not know, and it matters more than almost anything else when thinking about kissing risk.

The virus can be active on the skin surface even when there is no sore, no redness, and no symptom at all. The other person does not know they are contagious, and you would have no way of knowing either. Shedding tends to be most frequent in the first year after someone first picks up the virus and becomes less frequent over time.

Daily antiviral medication reduces how often shedding happens but does not eliminate it. If the person you kissed takes antivirals, their risk to you is lower, but not zero.

Can Kissing Give You Genital Herpes

This is one of the most common misconceptions I hear. Mouth-to-mouth kissing cannot give you genital herpes. The virus does not travel through your body from your mouth to your genitals.
