Who should vaccinate

Who Should Get the Hepatitis A Vaccine in Bangkok?

Recommended for all unvaccinated adults travelling to or living in Thailand. Hepatitis A transmission is not limited to street food or budget accommodation.

✈️

All Travellers to Thailand

Recommended regardless of trip length or accommodation standard. Contamination can occur at any food preparation point including hotel kitchens.

🏠

Expats and Residents

Year-round exposure risk. Complete the 2-dose course for lifelong protection and never think about it again.

🏥

Chronic Liver Conditions

Hepatitis A on top of existing liver disease significantly increases risk of severe illness. Annual vaccination is a clinical priority for this group.

💊

Healthcare Workers

Patient-facing healthcare workers in Thailand face occupational exposure risk from patients with undiagnosed hepatitis A infection.

🍽️

Street Food Enthusiasts

If you plan to eat broadly across Bangkok’s food scene, vaccination removes the risk entirely regardless of venue quality or hygiene standards.

📋

Adults Over 40

Less likely to have been vaccinated as children when the vaccine was less widely available. A single dose or 2-dose course provides immediate and lasting protection.

If you were vaccinated more than 20 years ago and cannot locate your records, a single booster dose is a reasonable precaution. Ask the physician at your consultation.

About hepatitis A

What Is Hepatitis A and How Do You Catch It in Thailand?

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection transmitted through contaminated food and water. Thailand’s street food culture, tap water quality, and high tourist density make it one of the most relevant vaccine-preventable infections for anyone visiting or living here.

Transmission happens when you consume food or water contaminated with trace amounts of faecal matter from an infected person. This includes ice made from tap water, raw shellfish, unpeeled fruit and vegetables washed in tap water, and food handled by an infected person with poor hygiene. Contamination can occur at any food preparation point in the supply chain, including in hotel kitchens.

Vaccination before exposure is the only reliable protection. There is no treatment for hepatitis A once infected. Management is supportive only.

2-6Weeks incubation before symptoms appear after exposure
2-3Months typical recovery time for healthy adults
LifelongImmunity from a completed 2-dose vaccination course

Hepatitis A Symptoms: What Does Infection Look Like?

Symptoms typically appear two to six weeks after exposure and include sudden onset of fatigue, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain in the upper right quadrant, dark urine, pale stools, and jaundice. Fever is common in the early stage.

Most healthy adults recover fully within two to three months. Older adults and those with underlying liver conditions face higher risk of severe disease, prolonged illness, and in rare cases acute liver failure. There is no chronic form of hepatitis A, unlike hepatitis B and C, but a single infection causes weeks of genuine illness and is entirely preventable with a single vaccine dose.

Vaccination schedule

Hepatitis A Vaccine Dose Schedule: How Many Injections Do You Need?

One dose provides strong short-term protection. Two doses provide long-term, likely lifelong immunity. Which you need depends on how long you are staying and whether you plan to return to Thailand or other hepatitis A-endemic countries in the future.

Single Dose Full 2-Dose Course
Dose 1Day 0Day 0
Dose 2Not required6 to 12 months after dose 1
Protection from2 weeks after dose 12 weeks after dose 1
DurationUp to 1 yearAt least 20 years, likely lifelong
Best forShort-stay travellersExpats and long-stay residents

If you receive your first dose at Doctor Bangkok before returning home, most travel medicine clinics and general practitioners globally can administer the second dose when you are due. The vaccination certificate issued at Doctor Bangkok documents your dose date and lot number for continuity of care.

Single Dose vs Full 2-Dose Course

The single dose is clinically appropriate for immediate protection before travel and for patients unlikely to return to an endemic region. The full 2-dose course is recommended for anyone who lives in or regularly visits Thailand, has chronic liver conditions, or wants the certainty of long-term immunity without needing to think about it again.

Soreness or redness at the injection site, mild fatigue for 24 hours, and occasional low-grade headache. All resolve without treatment and are expected signs of an immune response.

Cannot cause hepatitis A infection

The vaccine contains inactivated virus and cannot cause hepatitis A. Any mild symptoms after injection are your immune system building protection, not infection.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does the hepatitis A vaccine work?
+

Protection develops within two weeks of the first dose. If you are travelling imminently, vaccinate as early as possible before departure. Even if you receive the vaccine less than two weeks before travel, partial immune priming begins immediately and provides meaningful protection within the first week. Full protection is in place from day fourteen.

Can I get the hepatitis A vaccine if I am already in Thailand?
+

Yes. Doctor Bangkok provides same-day walk-in vaccination. There is no minimum lead time required. If you are already in Thailand and have not yet been vaccinated, walk in at any time. The vaccine is in stock at our Sukhumvit Soi 13 clinic. Protection will be in place two weeks after your dose.

Is the hepatitis A vaccine safe during pregnancy?
+

The inactivated hepatitis A vaccine is considered safe during pregnancy based on current clinical evidence. The theoretical risks of using an inactivated vaccine during pregnancy are low. The physician at Doctor Bangkok will review your obstetric history and current trimester before proceeding, and will discuss the balance of risk between vaccination and potential hepatitis A exposure given your specific travel plans.

Do I need hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines together?
+

If you are unvaccinated against both, getting both vaccines is a sensible approach. Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are different viruses with different transmission routes. A combined vaccine protecting against both, known as Twinrix, is available and may be more convenient than two separate injections. Ask the physician at your consultation whether the combined vaccine is appropriate for your schedule and situation.

Can I get hepatitis A from a restaurant in Bangkok?
+

Yes. Hepatitis A transmission is not limited to street food or budget restaurants. Any food preparation environment where infected handlers have poor hygiene and where produce is washed in contaminated water creates a transmission risk. This includes high-end restaurants, hotel buffets, and popular tourist venues. The vaccine eliminates this risk entirely regardless of where you eat.

How long does hepatitis A immunity last after the second dose?
+

Mathematical modelling of antibody decay rates following the two-dose course suggests immunity lasting at least twenty to thirty years, and potentially lifelong for most vaccinated adults. No booster is currently recommended after a completed two-dose course. This makes the full course a one-time investment for long-term residents and frequent travellers to endemic regions.

Does Doctor Bangkok provide a vaccination certificate for hepatitis A?
+

Yes. A signed vaccination record is issued on the same visit. The certificate documents the vaccine type, dose number, lot number, and date of administration. It is accepted by most airlines, employers, schools, and Thai government departments requiring proof of hepatitis A vaccination. If a specific format is required by your employer or institution, inform the physician at the consultation.
