Who Should Get the Influenza Vaccine in Bangkok?
Bangkok’s year-round influenza circulation means there is no safe window. The right time to vaccinate is whenever you are currently unprotected.
Travellers
Long-haul flights and crowded tourist areas create significant exposure risk. Vaccinate before or on arrival.
Expats and Residents
Year-round circulation in Bangkok means consistent risk. Annual vaccination maintains uninterrupted protection.
Adults Over 65
Higher risk of serious complications including pneumonia and hospitalisation. Annual vaccination is a clinical priority.
Pregnant Women
Recommended in any trimester by WHO and Thai Ministry of Public Health. Also protects the newborn for the first months of life.
Chronic Conditions
Diabetes, asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, or a weakened immune system all significantly raise complication risk.
Healthcare Workers
Frequent exposure to sick patients. Vaccination protects both the worker and the vulnerable patients they care for.
There is no single best month to vaccinate in Bangkok. The right time is whenever you are currently unvaccinated.
One Injection.
Under Five Minutes.
Twelve Months of Protection.
Unlike Europe or North America, Bangkok has no safe season. Influenza circulates year-round in Thailand’s tropical climate. Being unvaccinated is always a risk, regardless of when you arrive.
Confirm AvailabilityIs Influenza Dangerous? What Travellers and Expats Need to Know
The World Health Organization estimates influenza causes up to 650,000 deaths globally each year. Most healthy adults recover in seven to ten days. But for travellers, being bedridden with influenza in a Bangkok hotel room means missed flights, cancelled plans, and medical costs that dwarf the price of a single vaccine.
High-risk groups face more serious complications including pneumonia, hospitalisation, and respiratory failure. These groups include adults over 65, pregnant women, young children, anyone with diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or a compromised immune system, and anyone in regular contact with these groups. For these patients, annual vaccination is not optional. It is a clinical priority.
What Is the Influenza Vaccine and How Does It Work?
The influenza vaccine introduces inactivated fragments of the influenza virus into your body. Your immune system recognises these fragments as foreign, produces antibodies, and builds a targeted defence. If you are then exposed to a live influenza virus, your immune system is already primed to fight it before symptoms have a chance to take hold.
The World Health Organization updates the influenza vaccine formulation each year to match the strains predicted to be most prevalent in the coming season. Doctor Bangkok administers the current WHO-recommended quadrivalent influenza vaccine, which protects against four influenza strains simultaneously: two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains.
Protection takes effect within ten to fourteen days of vaccination and lasts approximately twelve months. Annual vaccination is recommended for anyone who wants consistent, uninterrupted protection across Bangkok’s year-round influenza season.
Influenza A typically lasts five to seven days for most healthy adults, with the most severe symptoms peaking in the first 48 to 72 hours. Fatigue and cough can persist for one to two weeks after the fever resolves. There is no cure. Prevention with the annual influenza vaccine remains the most effective way to avoid infection entirely.
Side Effects and Safety: What to Expect
Common side effects (mild, 1 to 2 days)
Soreness, redness or mild swelling at the injection site. Low-grade fever for 24 to 48 hours. Mild fatigue or headache. Slight muscle aches. These are signs your immune system is responding. They resolve without treatment.
The vaccine cannot give you influenza
The vaccine contains inactivated virus fragments with no ability to cause infection. Feeling slightly unwell after vaccination is your immune system at work, not the flu.
Safe during pregnancy — all trimesters
Recommended by WHO and Thai Ministry of Public Health in any trimester. Also provides passive immunity to the newborn for the first months of life through placental transfer.
Anaphylaxis equipment on site
Serious allergic reactions occur in fewer than one in one million doses. At Doctor Bangkok, full anaphylaxis management equipment is on site for every vaccination. All patients observed for 15 minutes as standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an appointment for the influenza vaccine at Doctor Bangkok?+
No. Doctor Bangkok operates as a walk-in clinic on Sukhumvit Soi 13, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can arrive at any time without prior booking. If you want to check vaccine availability or current wait time before visiting, WhatsApp the clinic and we will respond quickly.
How long does the influenza vaccine take to work?+
Protection from the influenza vaccine develops over ten to fourteen days as your immune system produces antibodies. You are not fully protected immediately after the injection. If you are travelling or have a specific event coming up, aim to vaccinate at least two weeks beforehand for full protection to be in place.
Can I get the influenza vaccine if I am currently sick?+
If you have a mild cold without fever, vaccination is generally fine to proceed. If you have a moderate or severe illness with fever, it is better to wait until you have recovered. The doctor at Doctor Bangkok will assess your current health before administering the vaccine and advise you accordingly.
How often do I need the influenza vaccine?+
Once a year. The influenza vaccine is reformulated annually by the WHO to match the strains predicted to be circulating, which is why last year’s vaccine does not provide full protection in the current year. Annual vaccination gives consistent protection against the most relevant circulating strains.
Is the influenza vaccine the same as the COVID-19 vaccine?+
No. They are entirely separate vaccines targeting different viruses. The influenza vaccine protects against influenza A and B strains. The COVID-19 vaccine protects against SARS-CoV-2. Receiving one does not affect the other. Both can be administered at Doctor Bangkok. Ask at reception if you want to combine both vaccines in the same visit.
Will I get a vaccination certificate?+
Yes. Doctor Bangkok provides a signed vaccination certificate on the same visit. This document is accepted by most airlines, employers, schools, and Thai government departments that require proof of influenza vaccination. If you need a specific format for a particular institution, let the doctor know at the consultation.
Is the influenza vaccine covered by insurance in Thailand?+
Coverage depends on your specific insurance policy. Many international health insurance policies cover annual influenza vaccination as a preventive health benefit, but some classify it as elective. Check your policy before your visit. Doctor Bangkok provides an itemised receipt suitable for insurance reimbursement claims. Payment at the clinic is required upfront regardless of insurance status.
Also at Doctor Bangkok
Doctor Bangkok also provides STD testing, IV drip therapy, and doctor hotel visits. If you need more than a vaccine today, ask at reception and we will arrange it in the same visit.
