Doctor Bangkok offers confidential HIV testing in central Bangkok with results in as little as 20 minutes. We use 4th generation Ag/Ab testing, which detects HIV earlier than older antibody-only tests. Walk-ins are welcome. All consultations are in English and your results stay private.
If you are reading this after a risky night out, a broken condom, or uncertainty about a partner’s status, you are in the right place. Getting tested is the right call. The anxiety of not knowing is always worse than having the answer, and for most people reading this, the answer will be negative.
Sexual health screening is something we do every day at our Sukhumvit clinic. We see expats, long-term residents, and visitors from all over the world. No judgement. Our job is to give you a fast, accurate result and talk you through what it means.
How does HIV testing work at Doctor Bangkok?
You come in, speak to a doctor, and we take a small blood sample. That is it. We run the test in-clinic and you have your result in 20 minutes for our rapid test, or within one to two days for our lab-based test.
The doctor will ask a few questions about your recent history. This helps us work out which test suits you and whether the timing makes sense for a reliable result. If you have come in too soon after a possible exposure, we will tell you and schedule a follow-up at the right time.
Everything we discuss is confidential. Your result does not go to your employer, your insurer, or Thai immigration.
Rapid HIV test: results in 20 minutes at our Bangkok clinic
The rapid test is what most patients ask for, and it is usually what we recommend when you need an answer the same day. You get your result before you leave the clinic.
Our rapid test is a 4th generation test. It detects both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, a protein that appears in your blood before your immune system has produced antibodies. This means it can pick up infection earlier than older tests.
For established infection, the test is over 99% accurate. That is what we offer in 20 minutes.
What is an anti-HIV test and how accurate is it?
"Anti-HIV test" is a broad term for any test that checks your immune response to the virus. The one we use is a 4th generation HIV Ag/Ab combo test, which looks for both antibodies and the p24 antigen at the same time.
No test is 100% accurate in the days immediately after exposure. If you are still within the window period, a negative result does not fully rule out infection. We will always discuss your specific timeline with you so you understand exactly what your result means. Any reactive rapid result is followed by a confirmatory lab test before we consider it a confirmed diagnosis.
What is a 4th generation HIV test and why do doctors recommend it?
The 4th generation test is the current standard of care. I recommend it to almost every patient who comes in for HIV testing at our Bangkok clinic.
The p24 antigen appears in your blood around 10 to 14 days after infection, often weeks before antibodies show up. By detecting both, the 4th gen test gives a meaningful result much earlier than an antibody-only test. For most patients, it is the right choice. It is fast, accurate, and covers the vast majority of exposure situations.
HIV window period: when can you get a reliable test result?
This is the question I get most often, and it is the most important one to get right.
The window period is the time between possible exposure and when a test can reliably detect the virus. Testing before this window closes can give you a false negative, even if you are infected. Testing before 14 days post-exposure is unlikely to give you a meaningful result, regardless of which test you use.
For a 4th generation lab-based test, most doctors consider a negative result at 45 days highly reliable. A negative at 12 weeks is considered conclusive.
If your exposure was very recent, come in anyway. We can assess your situation, discuss PEP if you are within 72 hours, and schedule you for the right test at the right time.
4th generation HIV test window period: how early can it detect HIV?
The 4th gen test can detect infection as early as 18 days after exposure, though results that early are at the less reliable end of the range. Most doctors use 28 to 45 days as the point where a negative result is reassuring, and 12 weeks for full confidence.
Rapid point-of-care 4th gen tests, including the one we use in clinic, may have a slightly wider window period than lab-processed versions. We will explain this to you when you test, and if you are in that early window, we will bring you back at the right time.
HIV self-test vs clinic test: which gives a more reliable result?
Self-test kits exist and some patients use them. I understand why. They are private and you can do them at home. But there are real limitations worth knowing.
Most HIV self-test kits available in Bangkok are 3rd generation antibody-only tests. This means a longer window period and no p24 antigen detection. A positive self-test result is not a diagnosis. It always needs a confirmatory test at a clinic.
If you need a result you can trust, especially if your possible exposure was within the last 12 weeks, come in for a clinic-based 4th generation test.
HIV test kits in Bangkok: where to get one and how accurate they are
You can find HIV self-test kits at some pharmacies in Bangkok and online. They are legal to buy and use. The most common brands are antibody-only, meaning 3rd generation.
If your possible exposure was more than 12 weeks ago and you want a quick private check, a self-test kit is a reasonable option. Just understand what you are getting. If you are testing within 12 weeks of an exposure, or if you want a medically documented result, a clinic test is the better choice.
HIV clinic in Bangkok: walk-in, confidential, English-speaking doctors
A question I hear regularly: "Will my result get back to my employer, my visa application, or my work permit?"
The answer is no. Your consultation at a private clinic is protected by medical confidentiality. Results from a private clinic are not automatically reported to Thai immigration, your employer, or any insurance company. We do not share your results without your consent.
One specific concern I hear from expats: Thai work permit medical examinations typically screen for syphilis. HIV is not a standard part of that process. A private HIV test you take on your own has no connection to your work permit medical. If you are ever unsure about data handling at any clinic, ask them directly. At Doctor Bangkok, we are happy to explain exactly how your information is stored and protected.
Prevention, treatment, and next steps at Doctor Bangkok
If your result comes back reactive, a rapid positive is not a confirmed diagnosis. The next step is a confirmatory test, which we arrange immediately. A doctor will sit with you, explain what the result means, and answer every question you have in English.
If a diagnosis is confirmed, HIV is a manageable medical condition. With antiretroviral therapy, people with HIV live long, healthy lives. One of the most important things to know is the U=U principle: Undetectable equals Untransmittable. When treatment brings the virus to an undetectable level, you cannot transmit HIV to a sexual partner. This is backed by strong clinical evidence.
We can also discuss PEP and PrEP at your visit. PEP, post-exposure prophylaxis, is a short course of medication that can prevent HIV from taking hold after a possible exposure. It must be started within 72 hours. PrEP, pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily tablet for people at ongoing higher risk. Both are available at our clinic and we can prescribe and advise on either. For ongoing care after a confirmed diagnosis, we can connect you with specialist services in Bangkok. You will not be left without a next step.

Frequently asked questions
Will my HIV test result at a private Bangkok clinic be reported to immigration, my employer, or my insurer?
No. A private clinic consultation in Thailand is protected by medical confidentiality and is not automatically shared with immigration, employers, or insurance companies. Thai work permit medicals typically screen for syphilis, not HIV. If you have any concerns about how your data is handled, ask the clinic directly before you test.
How soon after possible exposure can I get a reliable HIV test in Bangkok?
Testing before 14 days post-exposure is unlikely to give you a meaningful result. For a 4th generation test, most doctors consider a negative result at 45 days highly reassuring, and a negative at 12 weeks conclusive. If your exposure was very recent, come in anyway. We can assess your situation and discuss PEP if you are within 72 hours.
What is the difference between a rapid HIV test and a 4th generation HIV test?
Rapid refers to speed: results in 20 minutes. 4th generation refers to what the test detects: both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, which appears earlier in infection than antibodies do. At Doctor Bangkok, our rapid test is a 4th generation test, so you get both speed and accuracy in one.
What happens if my HIV test comes back reactive at Doctor Bangkok?
A reactive rapid result is not a confirmed diagnosis. We immediately arrange a confirmatory lab test, and a doctor will explain everything to you in English and stay with you through the process. If a diagnosis is confirmed, we discuss treatment options, refer you to ongoing care, and talk you through U=U: with effective treatment, HIV is both manageable and untransmittable.
Can I buy an HIV self-test kit in Bangkok and how accurate is it?
Self-test kits are available at some Bangkok pharmacies and online. Most are 3rd generation antibody-only tests, which means a longer window period and no p24 antigen detection. A positive self-test always needs clinical confirmation. If your possible exposure was within the last 12 weeks, a clinic-based 4th generation test gives you a more reliable result.
How often should I get tested for HIV in Bangkok?
For most expats with occasional lower-risk sexual activity, testing once a year is reasonable. If you are more sexually active, have multiple partners, or use PrEP, testing every three months is what most guidelines recommend. A doctor at Doctor Bangkok can advise based on your specific situation.
What is PEP and how quickly do I need to get it after a possible exposure?
PEP is post-exposure prophylaxis, a short course of medication that can prevent HIV from taking hold after a possible exposure. It must be started within 72 hours, and the sooner the better. If you think you may have been exposed, come in immediately. Do not wait to see if symptoms appear.
